The name of the Mackintosh Clan comes from the Gaelic mac-an-Toisich, the Son of the Chief. The Founder
may have been a son of that MacDuff who was an ancestor of the Earls of Fife. The Chiefship of the great
Confederation of Clan Chattan came to Angus, 6th of Mackintosh, by marriage with the Clan Chattan heiress.
The Mackintoshes were almost perpetually at feud with the Camerons, the MacDonells of Keppoch, the Gordons, and the Earls of Huntly and Morray. Although they refused to fight under Dundee, they were "out" in The Fifteen. During the campaign of The Forty-Five, it was the Lady Anne, wife of the Chief (a serving regular soldier) who raised the Clan for Prince Charles and, in the stratagem known as "The Rout of Moy", saw a handful of her men send 1500 Government troops packing. |
